Pet Safety in Disasters:
Prepare Now! June 1st was the official beginning of hurricane season.
Experts predict that there is a 74% chance that a major hurricane
will make landfall along the U.S. Coast this year. Now's the
time to create your disaster plan for your pets! Create a Disaster
Plan! Answer these questions for your pet: - What disasters are likely in my area?
- In the event of an evacuation, where will I take my pets?
- What are the best evacuation routes?
- What will happen if I'm not home in the event of an
emergency?
Assemble a Pet-Friendly
Disaster Kit: - Emergency contact information: Your veterinarian's phone
number, numbers of local emergency animal hospitals and
pet-friendly family/friends that are willing to help.
- One crate for each pet: The crate should be large enough for
your pet to sit, stand and turn around inside.
- One week supply of food (minimum): Sudden changes in diet can
cause diarrhea.
- Leash, collar and/or harness: Dogs and cats.
- Muzzle: Even the nicest dog can become aggessive when
hurt or scared.
- Litter, litter box and scoop for cats.
- Newspaper: For lining crates and easy clean-up.
- Food and water dishes.
- Paper towels.
- Trash bags and plastic bags for clean-up.
- Current medications, including heartworm preventative and flea
control.
- Instructions: Detailed dietary information for each pet as well
as notes about medications and dosages.
- Documentation: Photocopies of vaccination and ownership
records as well as photos of the owner(s) and pet together, which
can help to prove ownership or in the event of a lost pet.

The Golden Rules of Pet
Ownership The joy of pet ownership also brings responsibility. As a
responsible pet owner, I WILL: - Avoid making an impulsive decision about getting a pet. I will
learn about and carefully select a pet suited for my home and yard,
and my lifestyle.
- Adhere to local ordinances including licensing and leash
requirements.
- Control my pet for its own safety.
- Have my pet spayed or neutered, or take responsibility for my
pet's offspring.
- Keep only pets for whom I can provide a pleasant and safe
environment, adequate food and shelter, and companionship. I will
be a responsible caretaker throughout my pet's life.
- Do my part to help solve animal control and overpopulation
problems.
- Provide regular health care as recommended by my veterinarian
including rabies vaccination and other inoculations.
- Clean up after my pets and appropriately dispose of their
waste. I will prevent my pet from being unnecessarily noisy or
aggressive.
- Provide identification for my pets by using ID tags or other
means.
- Respect the living environment.
